Emotional Duration Overflow Drift (E.D.O.D.)
1. Classification
- Drift Container: Emotional Drift
- Dimension: Emotional Temporality → Duration
- Scope: Solo → Coupled → Collective
- Type: Drift Pattern
2. Core Definition
Emotional Duration Overflow Drift occurs when the temporal persistence of an emotional state exceeds the temporal capacity of the structure currently containing it, causing emotional duration to extend beyond the boundary within which that emotional process can remain proportionately organized.
The emotion persists.
Its legitimate duration is exceeded.
The excess duration has nowhere proportionate to go.
It overflows into surrounding emotional structures.
This differs from Duration Drift, where duration becomes disproportionate, and from Duration Leakage, where residual temporal influence crosses into another process.
Here, the defining condition is excessive temporal accumulation beyond the containing capacity of the emotional structure.
3. Structural Mechanism
Emotional Duration Overflow Drift propagates through five invariant stages:
Temporal Containment
An emotional structure establishes a finite capacity for sustaining an emotional process across time.
Duration Accumulation
Emotional persistence continues to accumulate within that structure.
Containment Saturation
The accumulated duration approaches or exceeds the structure’s temporal capacity.
Temporal Overflow
Emotional persistence extends beyond the structure’s capacity and begins occupying adjacent temporal or emotional space.
Overflow Stabilization
Repeated excess persistence becomes a recurring feature of emotional duration regulation.
4. Invariants
Emotional Duration Overflow Drift is present only when:
Temporal Capacity Exists
The emotional structure possesses a finite capacity for sustaining a process across time.
Duration Accumulation Exists
Emotional persistence progressively accumulates within that structure.
Capacity Is Exceeded
Accumulated duration surpasses the structure’s proportionate temporal capacity.
Overflow Occurs
Excess persistence extends beyond the original containing structure.
Behavioral Consequence
The overflow affects emotional regulation, relationships, identity, learning, adaptation, or temporal organization.
If extended emotional duration remains within the structure’s proportionate temporal capacity, the pattern is not Emotional Duration Overflow Drift.
5. Illustrative Examples
Solo
An emotional process continues accumulating temporal persistence beyond the capacity of the emotional structure containing it, causing the excess persistence to influence subsequent emotional processes.
Coupled
A relational emotional process continues beyond the temporal capacity available within the current relational structure, causing its excess persistence to occupy later relational interactions.
Collective
A collective emotional process accumulates beyond the temporal capacity of the social structure currently containing it, causing excess emotional persistence to spread into subsequent collective processes.
These examples clarify mechanism only.
6. Structural Cost
Temporal Saturation
The containing emotional structure increasingly approaches its temporal capacity.
Excess Persistence
Emotional duration exceeds the amount of temporal space proportionately available to the process.
Boundary Pressure
Adjacent emotional structures increasingly absorb temporal persistence originating elsewhere.
Learning Overflow
Adaptive emotional learning increasingly incorporates emotional persistence that exceeds the temporal conditions of the original process.
Relational Overflow
Relationships increasingly carry unresolved temporal accumulation from earlier emotional processes into subsequent relational states.
Identity Overflow
Personal emotional structures increasingly carry accumulated emotional duration beyond the temporal boundaries of the processes that generated it.
Systemic Emotional Duration Overflow
The emotional system progressively accumulates emotional persistence beyond the temporal capacity of the structures containing it, causing excess duration to extend into adjacent emotional processes and gradually increasing temporal pressure across the broader emotional architecture.
Over time, emotional processes continue persisting beyond their proportionate temporal containment, causing excess emotional duration to accumulate and redistribute across surrounding emotional structures rather than remaining contained within the lifecycle that generated it.
7. Drift Boundary
A genuinely long emotional process that remains within the temporal capacity of its containing structure is not Emotional Duration Overflow Drift.
Drift begins when emotional persistence exceeds the temporal capacity proportionately available to contain that process, causing excess duration to extend beyond its original temporal structure.
Healthy emotional duration permits extended persistence when the containing emotional architecture has sufficient temporal capacity to sustain it without forcing excess duration into adjacent structures.
8. Canonical Lock
Duration overflows when the persistence of an emotional process exceeds the temporal capacity of the structure containing it, causing excess emotional duration to extend beyond its original temporal boundary and progressively redistribute temporal pressure across adjacent emotional processes and structures.
